Projects Abroad volunteers Talibé Evil Alice writes in Senegal

It can not be long in Senegal regardless of the talib. Shoeless gown and overwhelmed by the excess tattered football shirts, woven between taxis and majestic crawling dynamic women between the wheels of stationary cars cats like the shade; trot in the wake of well-fed tourists with its clamor of the mark, "Give me a hundred francs" (equivalent 10p.) If new to the country and the concept of poor children with open eyes, have pity on you and dig in your purse, you are suddenly against the wall, pulling each piece of clothing available talib, screaming and shouting: "Give me hundred francs! Give me a hundred francs!

Understanding The Talibe whose children spend in thirteen hours a day begging on the streets and nights bent over a Koran, is necessary to find the narrow Daara where they live and elusive, the sometimes almost mythical figures of the wise, who act as teachers, professors, and the punishments version without the love of parents of children. A child life as a talib starts from the age of five when his parents, usually poor workers in rural villages or sometimes remote Mali and Mauritania to deliver the marabout in exchange for cash and the vague promise of religious education and a better life in the city for his son. Sometimes parents who have not gone beyond the town limits and are themselves poorly educated, I say the big stories marabouts, sometimes simple, practical, be fooled for the money they are offered attractive. If the child goes with Marabout, perhaps his first trip to the city overwhelmed by the honking of taxis, crowds of people, trucks and gas of diesel. However, these streets are their work and their livelihoods, will be supported until the age of 15 or 16 years when he left to fend for himself Daara.

Daara happens in which the front is slightly different from a neglected houses in the neighborhood, and shown where to sleep: a bedroom the size of a small room shared with anything between 10 and 15 other boys. Gently clean T-shirts hanging from the leaves of a banana the marabout discouraged washing as the dirtiest of child, the more likely it is to be pitied by a passerby or Toubab and given a few cents. Daara early morning is going to beg, or, as it grows, to carry shopping and errands. He has made 300 cents per day Home (30p) – has been not going to beat the marabout. This constant pressure can force one day, as many other children, theft and a life of demolition with the police.

When he returned at night, if the necessary amount of money, feeds two hours before studying the Koran. They learn to write Arabic and to recite large tracts of Scripture. Usually have no idea what these means. Depending on how the marabout liberals, some of the younger boys will be sent in a traditional primary school to learn some basic math and basic French and science, but others do not. And so time passes, shaking tins on street corners, to receive their certificate of completion: an entry for a small adult crime and more jobs skilled labor. Some kids save religiously for years to raise the money to return to their villages and sold to parents earlier this year and which has not have had contact since, in general, shows an amazing capacity for forgiveness.

For the casual tourist, this translates complicated history, after the first pity and sympathy provoked by their bucktoothed, grimacing faces, like a daily struggle to avoid them. They have quickly become a nuisance to stop watching a face but brand pants and dirty bare feet and see if you can reach the other side of the street. Picnic in the Park, chanting the "I have hunger, we hunger "Became a minor irritation, such as gulls around your feet jump to watch crumbs, but should be: a thirsty hungry child without parents, who are desperately looking to their party nuts, cheese, fruit and bread for all the bits left over so we can pass within range.

So what is there to help the Taliban? Who, if anyone tries to pacify the secret, possessive marabou, which are quickly aroused the wrath if you are perceived as an attempt "Compete" in the education of children, while trying to offer some security, a place to go to relax without the stress of Daara? The talib response centers as ATT, composed entirely of local volunteers and, occasionally, foreign aid. The center of TCA, and Talib Taxawu, is located on land wasteland covered in garbage in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Sor, San Luis. The local children who come to see the passage of Toubab grubbier are closed and their faces more the other districts, and also benefit from this center, which treats cuts and scrapes, and sometimes feeds them.

The doors are always ATT open, and offers card games, swimming, sports, and especially the breakfasts and dinners three times a week, including about 80 children have learned to trust. These projects are managed by volunteers abroad, and also funded by the organization. There is a bathroom (that children use only after much persuasion!) and a room with mattresses where they can sleep. However, only two or three are usual, as the marabou send the older kids – that have often developed a loyalty to their masters as strong as a parent, although it is often wrong – to complement the youth and take them to the rhythm and Daara inevitable. A the youngest boy, 6, returns each day to the center with a broad smile on his face, thought is free to take back to the evening.

Projects Abroad volunteers can make arrangements to go to participate in certain activities (including the more recent and a treasure hunt). It is strange to see talib One, laugh, love and earned before making attachments fast and fervent toubabs number of adults who come into contact with them, joking with each other, hitting the cards face down, hiding under the table. In these times it is hard to see his energy, charm, and we know that sleep where they can and if at times the streets, eat what they can waste, and all that they have the innocence suddenly lost. It also now appears that like most children.

Sometimes you can snag the game barely controllable rage, violent disputes over a slice of bread or throw some comments. In such moments, no amount of shouting to distract their blind fury. It is evident in Assane, who believes that about 12, whose right eye is distorted, missing a student and a milky blue. Look more closely, and you can see the bubbles in the film extends through it. Talib said a man was tied to a pole in 2002, after his hearing has deteriorated gradually until it is completely blind in the eye.

Many men suffer from skin disorders: Malick, 8, has large areas of swelling, redness, weeping legs and scabies all over his head. Katrin, Germany, and a foreign volunteer in the center, to clean and cover all day, despite their protests. Seydou, 16, is only 5 "2 and life in the center. It seems much younger than his age, and get a childish pleasure in reciting" Head, shoulders, knees and toes foot "in French. And then there's my favorite, Touba, whose face is so open and happy and still reaches more than hold his hand ….

The main problem is how to attract more children to the center, especially during the day sometimes there are a lot of students as talibe, without completely alienating the wise men, whose support is vital that organizations such as AT & T can take to try to integrate children into society and give them the skills – such as French, dyeing clothes, sewing and practical training that never otherwise acquired. It is very gratifying to work there and even just being there and seeing the outstanding work Katrin, Hajime (a student of a university in the United States), and Maimouna and Mary, local coordinators do.
