What is the "Gu" means the label is on NFL helmets?
Eugene Thurman Upshaw, Jr. (also known as Gene Uptown) (15 August 1945-20 August 2008) was a football player of the Oakland Raiders and Executive Director National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). In 1987 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Upshaw was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987 for his achievements as a player and a union leader. In 2004, the NCAA Division II sports information director receives the first Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman year. Delivered each year during the weekend of the NCAA Division II Football Championship by the Manheim (Pennsylvania) Touchdown Club. After his sudden death, the NFL announced that for the entire 2008 season, 32 teams will wear a patch on the left chest of jerseys with the initials "Gu" and the number 63, his jersey number with the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders, with whom Upshaw played his entire 15-year career of Hall of Fame also will honor him in his first game of the season opener against the Denver Broncos with a video tribute and a replica of the uniform plate painted on the ground. The patch also be painted on the field at Giants Stadium, where New York Giants and Washington Redskins open the season in the NFL on September 04. In his honor, the NFL announced that for the 2008-2009 season, all players wear GU "patch, also with Gene number 63 for the opening match of the season GU" and "63" are inscribed on the floor. However, during the Week 2 of the 2008 NFL season, the "GU 63" patch has been replaced by a helmet decal all NFL players. Only put Oakland Raiders a patch all season shirt. He died at the age of 63. By coincidence, the jersey number he wore during his Hall of Fame career was 63.
