The GU is a tribute to Gene Upshaw the 15 years Hall of Fame Oakland Raider guard (# 63) and Executive Director of the Union player who died in August. Upshaw was an active member of the negotiating committee of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. He directed the NFLPA in the unsuccessful strike in 1987 and years of antitrust litigation against the company, including a brief period in which the NFLPA became a partnership professional rather than a union, which ended with the acceptance by the union of a salary cap in return for free agents and a greater proportion of income league for members of the Union.
